Muhammad Ali

“I am America. I am the part you won’t recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.”




Muhammad Ali was stripped of his Olympic medals and his title was taken away because he refused to fight in the Vietnam War.

Rosa Parks

“I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear.”






Mrs. Parks was notably known for refusing to give up her seat for a white passenger, thus sparking the Alabama Bus Boycott and the Civil RIghts Movement.

Harriet Tubman

“When I found I had crossed that line, [on her first escape from slavery, 1845] I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything.”




Known as “Moses”, Harriettt Tubman led the black resistance movement by becoming a fierce conductor of the Underground Railroad having lost not one passenger. It has been noted that she had no issues with using force to get her passengers to the promised land.

Billie Holliday

Lady Day was castigated by the FBI for performing her signature song, “Strange Fruit” which was a song speaking of the ills of lynching in America.
